A day on your resort

A day on your resort

About the Maldives

Publicerad: 2009-10-21

A typical day in the Maldives guests laze around on the beach, snorkle, have a cool drink, get massage in the spa by surprisingly strong little ladies from Bali, sit on an excursion boat counting dolphins or try to take in the unbelievable beauty of Maldivian nature. These are - mind you - the very same individuals that worried about what on earth they would do all day. The problem is not what to do, it's to make the days last. Preferably never ending thus never bring you back to reality.

Calm

Meals are ususally the only set times you'll have. Some beach volley or a trip to a local island provides ammunition for dinner conversation. Even on the tiniest of islands where there are no activities on offer have I ever heard anyone saying they're bored. There is nowhere you can relax like here. It's what the Maldives does best. It's in the palm trees, embracing you, sucking you in. You'll start to wonder why you ever started to wear shoes when it' so comfy to go without. Most island have some kind of spa, beach volley, football, and of course diving and snorkeling. A few, larger islands, offer a whole range of activities and even a small, perfect, golf course, on Kuredu. Yoga is offered by a growing number of resorts.

Dress Code

There is no exact dress code anywhere on the reosrts andonly one absolute rule; No nudity. This means you can't swim or sunbathe topless. Respect this. At hte exttremely rare occasions I have seen anyone ignored this, to the Maldivians very serious rule, the people most irritated has been fellow guests sending black stares towards the offender. One simply does not want others to give tourists a bad reputation. You cannot sit in restaurants and bars in your swimtrunks either (excepting beach bars). A sarong is a very practical piece of clothing quickly draped around you when needed. Otherwise it's not that much trouble, rather fun actually, to get a bit spruced up with shorts and a top or a dress. Very light cotton and linens are bestt for the steaming climate. Don't forget to protect your head from the sun and wear sunglasses. A perfect ecuse for some fun shopping at the airport on the way. Sandals/flip flops and som trainers, just in case. No warm clothes whatsoever are needed.

Appropriate beachwear.

Maldivian time

This close to the equator there's daylight more or less 06.00 – 18.00. Many islands set the time an hour (or even more) ahead to make your days in paradise last longer. The reosrts are remote enough to make this apractical solution. The Maldive are officially GMT +5.

The staff

All Maldivians are mosleems and speak Divehi, even if Maldivians from the far south has a distinct dialect. Since they have always lived in very small communities on remote islands the Maldivians have are laid back and refrain from confontations with other people. You need to be a great diplomat on a small island. They handle tense situations really well and you can show respect by never raising your voice or, God forbid, Yelling at any of them. Very easy to get along with, even if you can expect island mode to be a tad slower than the pace of say, London. Giving tip straight up si not quite comme-il-faut. Discreetely tipping  your room boy or waitor is very appreciated though. I usually leave some at the very start of the holiday to show that I'm not one of the cheap shots who will leave without tipping at all. Then some depending on how satisfied I am. Us Dollar in small bill come in handy for tipping.

Friendly, helpful, patient  - and cheeky. Maldivians are wonderful people!
